Auckland comes alive with Prada Cup Challenger Selection Series
From 15th January to 22nd February, the five designated course area on Waitematā Harbour and Hauraki Gulf in Auckland would host the gala regatta— Prada Cup Challenger Selection Series. The winning team would be contesting the Emirates Team New Zealand in the 36th America’s Cup Match in March.
America’s Cup Match is an annual yacht race where the winning team of previous year is called the ‘defender’. They set the terms and conditions of current year’s race. Every other team competing is called ‘challenger’. The various challengers race among themselves and the winner competes with the ‘defender’ in the finale. The Prada Cup is a competition among the challengers.
The challengers of 2021 Prada Cup are American Magic(US), Ineos Team UK and Luna Rossa Challenge(Italy).
To add to the fun, Auckland’s summer festival, Summernova, has been designed to coincide with the American Cup’s dates. It is a four-month long collection of events with food, wine, music and art at its core. There is more in store. The Tāmaki Herenga Waka Festival and Auckland Lantern Festival would also keep onlookers busy through day and night!
The races would be aired in TVNZ 1, America’s Cup website, Youtube and other social media channels. To create the mood, restaurants, bars and Auckland Live Summer in the square would show the race and the events on big screen.
Race Schedule of Prada Cup Challenger Selection Series:
- 15 – 17 January Round Robins 1 & 2 (racing between 3 PM – 5 PM),
- 22 – 24 January Round Robins 3 & 4 (racing between 3 PM – 5 PM),
- 29 – 31 January, 2 February Semi-Finals (racing between 3 PM – 5 PM), and
- 13 – 14 Feb, 17 Feb, 19 – 22 Feb Finals (racing between 4 PM – 8 PM).
These dates are subject to change depending on weather conditions.
